Note 59 Mathias (02/11/09 17:03) Cyclical triggers [amended]

Hello Ardans,

I'd like to further clarify something regarding triggers.

If your triggered action prompts the trigger stimulus, you'll
enter an infinite loop, broken only by external stimulus. For
example, if you were able to throw a ball up into the air
which gave the message 'The ball falls to the ground' when it
returned down, and you set the trigger:
'The ball falls to the ground' todo 'throw ball up', the ball
would continually be thrown up into the air infinitely until
you left the room, someone else's trigger managed to take the
ball before you could get it, etc.

FURTHER CLARIFICATION OF 'external stimulus':
This may be: you manually (or automatically through a
client trigger) halting your trigger. You may run out
of EP. You may run out of materials. You may be
imprisoned or attacked by another player. You may be
disconnected from the game. You may be pushed off a cliff.
This listing of possible external stimuli is NOT fully
inclusive - other situations may apply!

If your trigger *action* prompts (with or without delay)
your trigger to fire, it is probably an infinitely-running
trigger.

These kinds of triggers fall squarely in league with bot scripts.
They can run for long periods of time with no interaction by
the player, and in many cases, the player can do other things
(like chat, etc.) while the trigger works its magic. These
triggers, when applied by skillful hands, can generate resources
for a player unfairly, and beyond that, they keep you active
when you may not be, artificially inflating your age.

As such, these types of triggers are illegal, and we ask that
you not use them. Use of these triggers may result in punishments
concurrent with those for botting.

We appreciate the insight that you, the player, use to make
playing the game easier, and this insight can (and has) improve
the gameplay so that it's less mundane.

If you are not sure if your trigger is ok, ASK via a law report.
Don't assume that it's okay! Folks intentionally trying to find
loopholes and gray areas will find little patience from us
(see: help troublemaking).

Thank you,

Mathias
