Alignment (General Help)
Character alignment is your character's tendency towards good or
evil acts; it represents your place on the Good and Evil scale. It
does not have to reflect your affinity with the Dark Lord's forces,
though; a brigand may be Immoral or Villainous, but that does not make
him a servant of Sauron. While the alignment is a gameplay feature
and is modified based on what NPCs you kill, we strongly encourage
you to also treat it as a part of your character roleplay. If you want
to play a noble elf, don't go around slaughtering innocent citizens!
Your alignment will change slightly every time you kill an NPC,
even if you do not immediately notice it with a change of the alignment
"title". Killing evil NPCs makes you more good, killing good NPCs
makes you more evil, and killing neutral ones (such as animals), will
shift you towards the Impartial alignment. We have the following
alignments in our scale, from Evil to Good:
- Shadowspawn (Free Races) and Shadowspawn of Mordor (Evils)
- Demonic
- Villainous
- Immoral
- Impartial
- Moral
- Heroic
- Angelic
- Hand of Eru
Every Free Race character of level 1-19 will have their alignment
visible in their title. Levels 20+ choose their custom titles, but they
can opt to have the alignment displayed as well. For Evil Race players,
the alignment is "fixed" to evil and thus is not visible in the title.
Its fixed value can only be checked through the "align" command.
Being good or evil is not a purely cosmetic thing, though. You
should expect that many NPCs will treat you differently based on whether
they perceive you as a friend or foe. Some may even attack you on sight,
so be careful!
It is possible for skilled characters, particularly assassins, to
mitigate the effect of alignment to an extent through skillful "disguise".
However, due to the fact that Evil Race players have a fixed alignment,
that option is available only to the Free Races.
